Selection Help|How to Select Shoes
The right shoe can take your game to the next level. When a shoe doesn’t fit right, it creates distraction. When it fits like a dream, it can keep you in the Zone. Some models offer great stability, in order to reduce foot fatigue and ankle rollovers. A stable shoe is essential for a big, strong player that pivots and pushes off very hard. For a smaller player that does not carry as much weight, these stable shoes may feel like rocks, compromising the natural movement of the feet, leading to injuries and chronic soreness. (Examples: Adidas Barricade, Head Prestige, Babolat Roddick Propulse) Other models are more light-weight and flexible. These shoes allow for more grace and speed for the smaller player who’s always on his/her toes. They allow the foot to do more work and push off better, instead of acting like a stopping block. Ankle support is usually not a feature of a lighter shoe. Depending on how a player moves, this can be a good thing. (Examples: K-Swiss Ultra-Natural, Asics GT 2130, Lacoste Repel) The struggle many shoe designers face is how to create a comfortable, cushy, lightweight shoe with maximum stability. Some companies are releasing modified versions of their firm shoes to strike a balance between comfort and stability. (Examples: Asics Gel Resolution, Nike Air Max Breathe, Adidas Feather) Breathability is another factor in choosing shoes. Some models have netting or a honey-comb pattern to keep the foot from getting odorous, sweaty and sometimes infected. Breathability is tough to achieve for some models that are very thick and heavy, while lighter shoes are naturally more breathable. If you’re a foot-sweater, go for a shoe with netting or holes on the side. Style and color are often factors when choosing a shoe, especially if your foot is not picky about what technology you put on it. Many brands go for style points before the comfort and stability points. If you’re looking to make a statement, you may want to consider the Nike, Lacoste, and Le Coq Sportif.
